Locating biological contamination

If a mandatory state or provincial test for waterborne pathogens fails, there are many possible reasons for this, for example:

  • Increase in pathogen content possibly due to biological pollution event (e.g. agricultural pollution)
  • Penetration of surface water into a ground source
  • Contamination resident in the intake piping
  • Contamination in water storage tanks
  • Cracked filtration membrane or crack in tubing of a nano-/micro-filtration battery
  • Growth of pathogens within the drinking water treatment facility piping or on a filtration medium

It is all too common practice to deal with contamination events by increasing the use of disinfection chemicals. When the source of contamination is not addressed, this practice is nothing but a band-aid solution, wasting money on chemical inputs and their subsequent removal downstream.

In some cases, a drinking water treatment facility may have resident biofilm growth, causing an overuse of disinfection chemicals. Because biofilm growth causes periodic spikes in contamination when a dislodging event occurs, it is extremely difficult to pinpoint biofilms. The chances of catching dislodged microorganisms with periodic sampling of small water volumes followed by lab testing are extremely low. The use Innosol instrumentation inline solves this problem by continually monitoring a water stream, and using a large portion of passing water (40,000 L or10,500 gal per day) for results that are statistically meaningful.

Innosol methodology and equipment allows detection of the exact cause of a contamination event, allowing you to resolve the issue entirely and in-situ.
